Adventure Is (Still) Out There!

Greetings, adults of Troop 271! As you will recall, last fall the boys vote to have one (or more) Adventures in addition to Camp Gerber this summer. Barb Caputo and Alex O’Brien have been working hard to come up with some feasible options. See below for a message from Barb and Alex:

We have narrowed down the 2018 adventures to the following 2 long weekends. Please take a look and let us know if this would be something you could commit to sending your scouts on and/or coming with us and helping.

Adventure 1, June 12th – 16th

1. Hocking Hills, Ohio (6 hr drive). Activities: hiking, canoeing/kayaking, horseback riding, ziplining.

2. Starved Rock State Park, Illinois (4 hr drive). Activities: horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, hiking.

The boys are planning to vote on which option they prefer at the next meeting (Thursday the 21st). If your son wants to vote but can’t make the meeting, he should send his choice to Regan or Jay.

For this trip we are looking into renting a 15 passenger van, this would be nice to have all the boys ride together. We would still pull the trailer and possibly have one more vehicle for the parents that would like to go with unless we all fit in the van. The basic cost for either of these trips would be a bit more than our usual weekend outings, and would vary depending on what activities (horseback riding, kayaking, etc.) the boys want to do.

We can either leave on Wed the 12th (after work) or on Thursday the 13th—we need your opinion on which you would prefer. Vacation time will be in play for some of us.  We will be coming back on Father’s Day, but if we leave in the morning we should be home in plenty of time to celebrate with our dads.

Adventure 2, Sept 19th – 22nd

1. Rendezvous 2019 in Detroit.

2. Make our own trip to the U.P.

We can either leave on Thursday night or Friday morning; you would have to excuse your son from school or meet us on Friday night.  We still need to find out more on both of these trips.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Barb ( or Alex (
