Messages 10/27/17

Greetings, adults of Troop 271!

It finally feels like fall, which means the weather is perfect for you to curl up with a cup of your favorite hot beverage as you carefully peruse this week’s long list of messages.

Popcorn. First, a huge THANK YOU to Alison Lovell for her fantastic work as Popcorn Kernel. Final returns were due this week, so if you have popcorn left in your possession, you are responsible for paying for it. If you have elected to do the cash buyout (or partial cash buyout), that money is also due. Please pay up so we don’t have to send John Mish after you.

Service. The next service project will be November 4 from 9-12 at the Calvin College ecopreserve. This will count toward conservation hours! Please sign up through the link in your Weekly Newsletter.

Scouting for Food bag distribution will be Thursday, November 9, starting at 4:30. We’ll meet at Lakeside Elementary and distribute bags through the neighborhood, then have a pizza dinner together before the regular troop meeting.

Greenbar. Next month’s PLC/Greenbar meeting has been moved up to November 2 (due to Scouting for Food). If your son is in leadership, please make sure he is there!

Thanksgiving outing. Our boys are planning some fun stuff to do with the Webelos we’ll be inviting to our Thanksgiving feast. We also need a few adult volunteers to help monitor some of those activities. In return, we’ll feed you some of the best food you’ll eat all year! The outing will be November 10-12 (or you can just come on Saturday) in Walker (by the Scout Shop).

Council events. Thanks to Dave Chynciski, our troop now has a regular representative at the Council Roundtables. This means we’ll be more aware of what is going on! We will be adding council events to the troop calendar, along with links for more information and registration. To be clear, Troop leadership will NOT generally be organizing Troop attendance at these events. You can register on your own, or get some friends to join you and organize a carpool. (I’ll be happy to help you send mass emails through TroopMaster if you’d like.)

Keep an eye on your Weekly Newsletter for those events. There is some cool stuff coming up, including Cit in the Nation at the Ford Museum, Environmental Science and Electronics at Hope College, and Scout Night at a Grand Rapids Drive basketball game.

One other Council event of note: the Scout Shop will be hosting an “Ethan Tree” for the holiday season. This is like an Angel Tree with a scouting theme—you can choose a tag from the tree, buy the gift indicated, and the folks at the Scout Shop will see that it is delivered to the Scout who needs it. Our Thanksgiving outing will provide an excellent opportunity to visit the Scout Shop, stock up on Badge Magic and extra slides (or am I the only one whose sons regularly lose those?), and pay a little bit forward.

For a complete list of upcoming events, please refer to the Troop Calendar or your Weekly Newsletter!

Popcorn Final Orders Due and other messages

Good morning! (or evening, or whatever time you’re reading this post…) Here are some important messages from Troop 271.

POPCORN FINAL ORDERS AND RETURNS ARE DUE THIS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26! If you have popcorn checked out and you do not return it by Thursday, you will be responsible for paying for it (whether you manage to sell it to someone else or not). If you cannot make it to the meeting on Thursday, please contact Alison Lovell to make alternate arrangements for orders and returns (

We still have plenty of volunteer opportunities available. It’s as true for parents as it is for Scouts:  the more you put into scouting, the more you’ll get out of it. Do you like working hands-on with the boys? Talk to Erik about becoming an ASM, or talk to Star about counseling a merit badge or two. Would you prefer a job that mostly involves sending emails and making phone calls? Talk to LaVonne about serving as the recruitment coordinator. Is there something that you think should be happening in the troop, but isn’t? Talk to any of the leaders and we’ll gladly help you start it!

Don’t forget to check the Troop Calendar for upcoming events, and don’t forget that you can request login permission to the Troop Website to gain access to all kinds of useful forms, documents, and a searchable archive of all these messages! (Just click the Join us link.)

The next Committee meeting is this Thursday, October 26. All parent and adults of Troop 271 are welcome to attend. The agenda will be:

Approval of Minutes from the last meeting

Scoutmaster Report

Treasurer’s Report and Popcorn Update

Service Project Update

Outing Coordinator’s Update

Roundtable Report

I Say POP! (you say corn)

First, a huge THANK YOU to Alison Lovell (Gehrig’s mom, for those of you who don’t know) for courageously taking on the role of Popcorn Kernel! If you were at the meeting on Thursday, this message is a summary of information you already know—just skim to the Important Dates part. If you weren’t at the meeting, please read this carefully and feel free to ask questions.

The per scout popcorn sales commitment this year is as follows:

Popcorn Sale Cash Supplement
$350 (or 3 group Show & Sells*)
$250 (or 2 group Show & Sells*) $35.00
$125 (or 1 group Show & Sell*) $80.00
No sales $120.00

*based on projected sales of $250 per Show & Sell

You can fulfill your fundraising requirement in several different ways:

  • Simply pay $120 cash
  • Participate in group Show & Sells (see this signup sheet)
  • Do individual take-order sales (we’ll have sales sheets available at the meeting next Thursday)
  • Do individual Show & Sells (contact Alison at to make arrangements)
  • Any combination of the above

Please keep careful records of your sales, including online sales! We will make every effort to keep good records, but we can’t guarantee that no mistakes will be made.

NEW THIS YEAR! If your scout sells more than $350 worth of popcorn, 34% of the extra sales will go into his “scout account,” to be used for his Troop activities. So, for example, if your scout sells $800 worth of popcorn, he will receive 34% of $450, or $153, in his account. (total sales – $350) * 0.34 = amount added to scout account

This Saturday, September 16: Next order due to Council. If you plan to do individual Show & Sells, please let Alison know and give her a rough estimate of what you would like her to order for you. (See below for details of what is available this year.)

October 26: Final returns. If you do not return any unsold popcorn in your possession by this date, you will be responsible for full payment to the troop. And we will hound you for it, believe me.

October 26: Final orders due. If you have done take order sales, you need to turn in your sheets to Alison by this date so she can place the order for you. And don’t forget to mark the prize/s your son wants!

NEW THIS YEAR: Reload/Return Wednesdays. Alison will go each Wednesday as necessary to gain additional product for show and sells and at anyone’s request. They don’t have all product available there, but they have most of it.  Please let Alison know at least 3 days in advance what you would need so that she can call in advance if necessary.

And finally, here is the product that is available this year:

  • Chocolate Lovers Collection – $60
  • Cheese Lovers Collection – $30
  • Salted Caramel (tin) – $30
  • Chocolatey Caramel Crunch – $25
  • Premium Caramel Corn – $20
  • Unbelievable Butter – $20
  • White Cheddar – $15
  • Classic Caramel Corn – $10
  • Popping Corn – $10

Any questions? Please contact Alison at for clarification and details. And don’t forget to get your Show & Sell orders in ASAP!

August 6, 2017

Howdy Folks,

Just a few quick questions for you this week…

1. Are you interested in selling popcorn early this year? We’ll do the regular popcorn sale in September/October, but if you’d like to get off to a head start, let me know by Friday (the 11th). We can order early popcorn on Saturday.

2. Do you want to camp out on the Whitecaps field on August 25? Let me know if you’re interested (or interested in organizing a group).

3. Are you ready to help fill Troop 271’s service commitment to Mayflower Church and IHN? The next IHN dates are August 20 for setup and August 27 for teardown. Check your Weekly Newsletter for more details and to sign up.

I hope you’re all having a great summer. See you soon!
